June 26 (Citizen News) - The Ministry of Transport and Highways has announced plans to strengthen the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) by bringing in 600 new buses before the end of 2026.
The planned fleet expansion includes 200 luxury buses for expressway services and 400 standard buses for use on regular routes. Officials say the full consignment is expected to arrive by December.
Separately, the ministry confirmed that 104 newly acquired Metro buses are already on their way to Sri Lanka and are due to arrive by August 15.
The Metro buses will be fitted with a card-based fare payment system. Once installation and operational testing are completed, they are expected to begin carrying passengers from September 20.
According to the ministry, the initiative is aimed at improving public transport services, easing passenger demand on both expressway and regular routes, and modernizing the SLTB fleet with advanced technology to provide a more efficient and convenient travel experience for commuters.
