New Gazette Introduces Amendments to Colour-Coded Sugar Labelling on Beverages

July 03 (Citizen News) – An Extraordinary Gazette has been issued introducing new amendments to the colour-coded labelling regulations for sugar-containing liquid food products.

The amendments were gazetted by Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa under Section 32 of the Food Act No. 26 of 1980, and published on June 23.

Under the revised regulations, new design and display requirements have been introduced for the red, amber, and green colour labels that indicate the sugar content of beverages.

A new alternative logo has also been introduced for glass bottles, where limited printing space makes the standard label difficult to display.

Additionally, the amendments define "business-to-business food products" as food items that are not sold directly to consumers, but are intended solely for further processing, preparation, or resale.
