Former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda arrested over corruption allegations

July 03 (Citizen News) – Former Navy Commander Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda was arrested on Friday by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over allegations related to the recruitment of Yoshitha Rajapaksa into the Sri Lanka Navy in 2006.

According to CIABOC, Karannagoda is accused of facilitating the recruitment of Yoshitha Rajapaksa as a cadet executive officer despite allegedly not meeting the required qualifications for the position.

The Commission further alleged that Rajapaksa was later sent to attend a training programme at the Royal Naval Academy in the United Kingdom at State expense, outside the established recruitment procedures.

CIABOC stated that the alleged actions constitute an offence of corruption. Karannagoda was taken into custody at around 10.05 a.m. at the Commission's premises and is expected to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court. - Newswire
