June 26 (Citizen News) – President Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament that the government will not proceed with enforcing the current Online Safety Act in its existing form, and is instead preparing a revised version of the legislation.
He made these remarks during an adjournment debate on measures to combat drug trafficking and organized crime, noting that the government had previously opposed the introduction of the Act and believes it requires substantial changes.
The President added that the revised bill will be designed to protect fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and democratic freedoms, while ensuring that any provisions that could undermine public rights are either removed or reformed.
