New Dengue Strain Behind Rise in Cases, Says PM

June 27 (Citizen News) – Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya says the recent spike in dengue infections has been linked to the emergence of a new dengue virus strain.

Addressing an event in Wadduwa, she said the government responded by launching a nationwide dengue prevention and control campaign, which has helped slow the spread of the disease.

The Prime Minister noted that health authorities are now observing a gradual decline in reported dengue cases following the large-scale control measures introduced across the country.

She added that the Colombo District remains the hardest-hit area, with Maharagama and several Colombo suburban areas continuing to record a high number of infections.

According to Amarasuriya, mosquito breeding sites are being detected predominantly in public spaces, including schools, office premises, vacant lands, and abandoned construction sites, rather than in private homes. - Newswire
