Opposition concerned about delays in filling Superior Court vacancies

May 13 (Citizen News) - The opposition has expressed concern regarding the delay in filling key vacancies in the Superior Courts. Addressing the media briefing held in Colombo yesterday, SJB MP Dayasiri Jayasekera said the shortage of judges is reported to cause a backlog of cases, hindering the timely dispensation of justice.

Sri Lankan Superior Courts, where a total of  eight vacancies-five in the Supreme Court and  three in the Court of Appeal-led to significant concerns regarding case backlogs and reduced efficiency.

One of those five positions in the Supreme Courts has been vacant for more than six months now and has not been filled yet.The significant delays in filling vacancies in Sri Lanka’s Superior Courts is viewed as a threat to judicial independence and efficiency.

“We also request that the environment be created for the judges of this country to work independently. The opposition will take any action that can be taken to establish the independence of the judiciary and judges in this country, together with the people,”the statement said.
