Special traffic arrangements in Colombo for Maldives President’s visit

May 04 (Citizen News) - A special traffic management plan has been implemented in Colombo in connection with the official visit of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, the Police Media Division announced.

The traffic plan is in effect from May 4 to May 6, 2026, with arrangements introduced to ensure security and smooth vehicular movement within Colombo city limits during the President’s engagements.

Accordingly, temporary traffic restrictions and diversions will be enforced intermittently along routes used by the VIP convoy. Police warned that heavy vehicles will be prohibited from entering affected roads two hours prior to each movement, while all other vehicle traffic will be restricted during convoy movements.

Today (May 4), traffic restrictions will be enforced along routes leading to the Presidential Secretariat, including areas around N.S.A. Roundabout, Galle Middle Road, and Bank Road. Entry of buses and heavy vehicles will be restricted ahead of the convoy movement.

In the afternoon of May 4, restrictions will extend to areas surrounding Viharamahadevi Park, including Ceramic Junction, Regal Junction, Library Roundabout, Nelum Pokuna, and Dharmapala Mawatha.

In the evening of May 4, traffic limitations will be imposed in the vicinity of the President’s House, particularly along Bank Mawatha and President’s Mawatha.

On May 5, 2026, traffic restrictions are also expected as the Maldivian President visits several locations, including the Colombo National Museum, the Maldives Embassy, and a cultural centre. Affected routes include Ceramic Junction, Library Junction, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, R.A. De Mel Mawatha, Galle Road, Havelock Road, and surrounding areas. Return routes via Thummulla, Nelum Pokuna, and Pittala Junction will also experience temporary restrictions.

On May 6, 2026, traffic restrictions will be enforced along key routes from central Colombo to the airport, including Bank Mawatha, President’s Mawatha, Galle Road, Borella, Dematagoda, and the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway during the President’s departure.

Police have advised motorists to use alternative routes to avoid delays. Vehicles travelling from Pettah, Fort, Kandy Road, Galle Road, High Level Road, and Avissawella are urged to follow designated diversions via Panchikawatte, Borella, Kelaniya, and other connecting roads.

Motorists are strongly advised to plan their journeys in advance and strictly follow police instructions to minimise inconvenience.
