June 28 (Citizen News) – Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced that he will resign from his position within the coming weeks.
He also confirmed that Serbia will move ahead with early presidential and parliamentary elections.
The decision comes after prolonged anti-government protests that have continued for nearly 18 months.
The unrest was largely triggered by the collapse of a railway station roof in Novi Sad in November 2024, which resulted in the deaths of 16 people.
Opposition groups and students have accused the government of corruption and poor governance, linking the tragedy to systemic failures.
Vučić was originally expected to complete his second and final term in mid-2027.
He further stated that he will support his Serbian Progressive Party in the upcoming elections and suggested the party contest under the name “United Serbia.” - adaderana
