July 03 (Citizen News) – At least 40 people were killed and eight others injured after an overcrowded passenger bus veered off a highway and plunged into a rocky ravine in southwestern Pakistan early Friday, authorities said.
The accident occurred in Dana Sar, a remote area near the border between Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. According to Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind, the bus lost control before crashing into the ravine.
Officials said the vehicle was overcrowded, as it was carrying not only its own passengers but also travellers from another bus that had broken down.
Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti expressed his condolences over the tragedy and instructed officials to provide the best possible medical care to those injured.
Rescue teams are continuing efforts to identify the victims and assist the injured.
Road accidents are frequent in Pakistan due to poor road infrastructure, weak enforcement of traffic regulations, and unsafe driving practices, particularly in mountainous regions. - adaderana
