June 29 (Citizen News) – The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have officially confirmed the qualification pathway for cricket's return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028 (LA28).
Six teams will compete in both the men's and women's T20 tournaments, with all matches set to be played at the purpose-built cricket venue in Pomona, Los Angeles.
Five teams in each competition will secure direct qualification through a combination of existing ICC events and ICC T20I rankings, while the sixth and final place will be decided through the inaugural ICC Olympics Qualifier, scheduled to be held in 2027.
For the men's event, the highest-ranked eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania in the ICC Men's T20I rankings as of December 31, 2026, will qualify automatically, provided they are ranked within the top 15.
Host nation the United States will also qualify for the men's and women's tournaments if they are ranked among the top 15 in the respective ICC T20I rankings by the qualification cut-off date.
In the women's competition, Australia, Great Britain (via England), India and South Africa have already secured qualification through their performances at the ongoing ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026.
If the USA women's team fails to meet the ranking requirement, the additional automatic qualification place will be awarded to the highest-ranked non-qualified team in the ICC Women's T20I rankings as of March 1, 2027. Likewise, if the USA men's team does not qualify, the place will go to the next highest-ranked eligible nation that has not already secured a berth.
As the West Indies is not recognised as an Olympic National Olympic Committee (NOC), it cannot compete directly at the Olympic Games. However, if its men's or women's team finishes among the highest-ranked teams still seeking qualification, the ICC will organise a Caribbean qualifying event to determine which nation will represent the region at the ICC Olympics Qualifier.
The 2027 ICC Olympics Qualifier will feature eight teams in both the men's and women's competitions, with the winners claiming the final qualification spots for LA28.
At the Olympic Games, the six qualified teams in each event will be divided into two groups of three. The top two teams at the end of the competition will contest the gold medal match, while the third and fourth-placed teams will compete for the bronze medal.
Each participating nation will be permitted to name a 15-player squad for the Olympic cricket tournament. - adaderana
