December 29 (Citizen.lk News) - Sri Lanka has secured the fifth position among the Best Places to Visit in Asia for 2026, according to rankings released by U.S. News & World Report, placing the island nation alongside some of the continent’s most iconic destinations such as Mount Fuji, Tokyo, Palawan, and Seoul.
U.S. News & World Report, a leading American media organization known for its global rankings, consumer advice, and in-depth analysis, ranked destinations based on a data-driven evaluation. The assessment considered local prices, accessibility, cuisine, diversity of attractions, and reader feedback.
The list is topped by Mount Fuji in Japan, followed by Tokyo, Palawan in the Philippines, and Seoul in South Korea, with Sri Lanka earning fifth place.
Describing Asia, the publication noted that the continent is “the planet’s largest continent, a world unto itself, with destinations that grant travelers uniquely enriching experiences that can’t be found close to home.”
In highlighting Sri Lanka, U.S. News & World Report praised the country’s ability to offer world-class travel experiences without the heavy tourist crowds seen in many popular Asian destinations. The report emphasized Sri Lanka’s rich natural and cultural diversity, ranging from rainforests and golden beaches to ancient cities and wildlife reserves.
“The island nation of Sri Lanka, located off the southern tip of India, boasts rainforests, beaches, and ruins, without the tourist crowds of Asia’s most popular destinations,” the publication stated. It further noted that despite its small size, Sri Lanka is home to 26 national parks, offering safari experiences to see elephants, leopards, and sloth bears. Iconic heritage sites such as Sigiriya and the ancient city of Polonnaruwa were also highlighted, along with the island’s palm-fringed beaches ideal for relaxed coastal getaways.
The recognition reflects Sri Lanka’s growing appeal among global travelers and reinforces its position as a diverse and accessible destination within Asia.
