Sri Lanka-Iran ties broadened significantly under Khamenei, says foreign minister

March 05 (Citizen.lk News) - Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath on Tuesday (04) visited the Embassy of the Iran in Colombo to pay his respects following the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Signing the book of condolence opened at the embassy, Herath conveyed Sri Lanka’s sympathies to the Iranian people and government.

“Today I offered my deepest condolences to the Islamic Republic of Iran on the death of His Eminence Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Our bilateral ties broadened significantly under his tenure. Sri Lanka remains appreciative of Iran’s friendship. Our thoughts are with the Iranian people,” the minister said in a statement.

Earlier, the Embassy of Iran in Colombo announced that a book of condolence would be opened at the residence of the ambassador at No. 222, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7, from March 4 to March 6 between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
