Railway Strike Called Off: Normal Service Resumes

February 18 (Citizen.lk News)-The nationwide railway strike scheduled to begin at midnight has been  canceled following successful late-night negotiations. Train drivers from the Locomotive Operating Engineers' Union and the Locomotive Officers' Association agreed to return to work after the government addressed their primary grievance.

The dispute centered on the controversial decision to recruit 20 Army personnel for driver training, a move the unions strongly opposed. However, during a midnight press conference, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Dr.Prasanna Gunasena officially announced the suspension of the military training program. With the government’s reversal, trade unions have resumed normal operations, ensuring that commuters will face no disruptions today
