President makes maiden address at UNGA

September 25 (Citizen.lk News) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake delivered his maiden address at the General Debate of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

In his speech, the President focused on key global issues, including poverty alleviation, the debt burden faced by developing nations, and the fight against drug trafficking.

This marks President Dissanayake’s first appearance at the UNGA since assuming office. He arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday morning (US time) and was welcomed by Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the UN, former Chief Justice and President’s Counsel Jayantha Jayasuriya, along with members of the Sri Lankan delegation.

During his visit, President Dissanayake met with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk and is expected to hold bilateral discussions with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and several world leaders. He will also meet with members of the Sri Lankan community in the United States.
