Police launch Islandwide green initiative to plant 16,000 trees

February 03 (Citizen.lk News) - In a significant move toward sustainable environmental management, the Sri Lanka Police officially launched a nationwide tree-planting initiative yesterday at the Police Field Force Headquarters in Thimbirigasyaya.

Organized to coincide with the 78th National Independence Day, the program aims to plant 16,000 trees across all police divisions.

During the inaugural phase, saplings were distributed to 126 police stations within the Western Province.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of Hon. Ananda Wijepala, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, and Hon. Dr. Dammika Patabendi, Minister of Environment.

The initiative focuses on transforming police divisions into eco-friendly hubs and fostering a greener landscape across the island.

The event saw the participation of nearly 170 officers from 11 divisions. Approximately 1,100 saplings were symbolically handed over to environmental police officers by the Ministers. Other notable attendees included Inspector General of Police Ravi Seneviratne, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Russell Aponso, and Additional Secretary to the President Sugeeshwara Bandara.

By spearheading this program, the Sri Lanka Police reinforces its commitment to the government’s vision of a clean, safe, and green environment for future generations.
