October 31 (Citizen.lk News) - The latest audit report has revealed that the Army is using 73 vehicles owned by various government institutions, including ministries and departments, without formally taking them over.
The vehicles include tractors, trailers, ambulances, cabs, jeeps, fuel bowsers, buses and motorbikes.
The audit noted that 24 of these vehicles were not in running condition during the period from 2014 up to the year under review and had been parked at Army premises.
In response, the Accounting Officer stated that action is being taken to collect the necessary documents from the relevant institutions, after which the formal takeover of the vehicles will be completed.
The audit recommended that the Army either formally take over the vehicles or return them to the respective institutions to ensure proper accountability and management.
Meanwhile, the audit report also revealed that of the 547 vehicles acquired by the Army during the war period, 454 vehicles lacked insurance coverage, while 221 vehicles were not used for any activities in 2024 and remained parked within the Army premises.
The Accounting Officer informed that steps are being taken to obtain insurance coverage for the remaining vehicles.
The audit recommended that the Army take urgent action to ensure all running vehicles are properly insured and that necessary measures are taken for vehicles currently without coverage.
